6 March 2022Photons, in semiconductors, are progressively replacing electrons in communications, but combining the two has never proven straightforward. The concept is to combine the processing power of electronics with the speed of light for data transport. This may be accomplished by combining photonic materials with normal electrical circuits, allowing light to be created, steered, modified, amplified, and detected. At the same time, miniaturisation of such materials to accomplish the aforementioned activities is being considered, with photonic crystals appearing to be a step in the right direction. Several strategies have been considered in order to attain the aforementioned objectives.Photonics, in semiconductors, is used in a variety of critical applications. Some of them are applied by converting analogue light, to and from digital electronics. This is essentially the sensor and display devices, each of which has its own applications. The unquenchable quest for bandwidth is the true driving force behind photonics. Networking, particularly in data centres, not only makes things quicker, but it also opens up new possibilities. Consider speech recognition systems that infer information from the cloud. This necessitates lightning-fast computing and low delay, so that everything appears to be happening in real time.
